Sure signs of a Diastasis

A sure sign of a diastasis is:

  • When you are repeatedly asked if you’re pregnant…… when you’re not!
  • Having an outie belly button. This is a side effect of a diastasis recti.
  • Back problems. Connective tissue is not a good support system for your back.
  • Gastrointestinal problems. The intestines are now supported by connective tissue instead of muscles.

The Tupler Technique® program is all about healing the connective tissue.

Closing a diastasis does not guarantee it will stay closed. The belly button is a weak spot in the connective tissue. If you use your abdominals incorrectly, and put force on this weak spot, you can cause your diastasis to re-open your diastasis.  So it is crucial to do the other three steps of the program for the rest of your life.

Why should I bother to close my diastasis?

So all mum’s have a bit of a mummy tummy right?  Why do I need to worry about closing my diastasis?   As you are probably aware closing your diastasis recti flattens and tones your tummy and reduces your waistline.

But there are many other benefits to closing your diastasis:

Will wearing the diastasis rehab splint® make my muscles weaker?

This is a very valid question as some abdominal binders do weaken your muscles.  The diastasis rehab splint® will NOT weaken your abdominal muscles.  The purpose of the splint is to pull your separated muscles together.  Bringing the muscles closer together makes the Tupler Technique® exercises more effective, thus making your abdominals stronger.  By bringing the muscles closer together it helps you to feel the muscles whilst you are doing the exercises, and at the same time puts the connective tissue it a better position to heal.

Ultimately closing your diastasis recti is all about healing your connective tissue.  Compression garments that bring the belly back to the spine will weaken your muscles as they are doing the work that’s your muscles should be doing.  The Tupler Technique® programme strengthens your muscles so that they can do the job themselves.

Do I have diastasis recti?

Of course it takes time to get your body back after giving birth.  We all accept that things may not be exactly as they were, but sadly many women who are affected by a diastasis recti are simply not aware that they have it.

Awareness of the condition is improving but many GP’s do not even check for this at the 6 week check up.  Many women don’t realise there is something not quite right with their tummy until 5 or 6 months, or even years, after giving birth.

Diastasis recti is a common condition in men

Women who have had children make up a large proportion of our client base, but increasingly we are helping lots of men too.   Diastasis recti is a common occurrence in men.

So how does it happen?   There are various things that can cause a diastasis recti in men, but one of the main ones is that many men will do lots of crunches and straining exercises to try and achieve trim abdominal muscles.  These crunches can create intra abdominal pressure and cause the connective tissue to stretch.  Any weight gain then puts pressure on the weakened tissue and causes a man gut.

The great news is the Tupler Technique® can give you toned abdominals, a strong support system for your back, a smaller waist and a healthier prostate.

What does diastasis recti look like?

Pressure on abdominal muscles from pregnancy, forceful pressure from doing the wrong type of abdominal exercises or putting on weight can all cause a diastasis recti.

This protrusion is not due to excess weight. Because the abdominal muscles are separated,  the internal organs are pushing against the weakened linea alba (connective tissue) causing this protrusion.

This client had a diastasis of 5 1/2 fingers which is quite severe.

Nine weeks after starting the Tupler Technique programme she had closed this gap to just 2 fingers.  As you can see the abdominals look more toned and the tummy much flatter.  The Tupler Technique® helps to strengthen and heal the connective tissue which in turn helps bring the muscles back together.

Why have I still got an “outie” belly button?

An “outie” belly button is usually a sign of an umbilical hernia, which is a common side effect of diastasis recti.  A diastasis recti is a separation of the outermost abdominal muscles.   As the muscles separate the connective tissue joining the muscles (this is know as the linea alba) stretches sideways and becomes thin like a piece of cling film.  This means your organs and back are now being supported by this weakened connective tissue instead of your muscles if they were together.

Continuous forward forceful pressure, such as the growing uterus in pregnancy, a beer belly or using your abdominals incorrectly either through exercise or throughout your day to day activities puts increasing pressure on this connective tissue.  As your belly button now has no support an umbilical hernia often occurs.

The 4 step Tupler Technique® helps to heal this weakened connective tissue.  As the tissue gets stronger and your bellybutton has more support your umbilical hernia also begins to heal, and you will see your “outie” return to an “innie”.
